Sceptic or believer? I had too much nerdy fun presenting some findings from my State Library Victoria fellowship research into séances of late-1800s Melbourne, at Salon D’Arc earlier this month.

Stay tuned! This work-in-progress pilot was an ace milestone towards realising my final fellowship outcome: a full immersive theatrical SÉANCE re-enactment in a Victorian-era chamber … yes, it’s confirmed for 2026!

Like a kid in a haunted candy shop, I got to film in the dead of night at @library_vic to explore some of my Library Fellowship research findings into séances during 19th Century Melbourne. Full Video drops on #Halloween on State Library Victoria YouTube and on my socials. Expect Spirits Slates, hot dead prime ministers, a book ‘written’ by a ghost and some great work from @tinyempirecollective, Jodi from the Alma collection and best bud security @djandrewmcclelland.

I did a little interview for @abc_arts new season of TV series THE ART OF... Loved chatting about the cross-over of art, awe and mystery with co-hosts Zöe and Namila -but hopefully didn’t reveal too much. The Art Of… New episodes on iView.

Performed my first gig of the year and Penn and Teller were in the audience. No pressure.

Cheers to Tim Ellis for organising a great night @thelanewaytheatre

“The Spirit Hand” is one of the curiosities that I have come across as part of my @library_vic research Fellowship to uncover Melbourne’s historical fascination with séances and mediumship. 👻

Hidden away inside a grey archive box in the WG Alma Collection, the Spirit Hand was originally used in a Spiritualist-themed conjuring act to evoke one the most common means of spirit communication: table rapping. 🫳

After being examined by sceptical witnesses, a sheet of glass would be suspended above the floor and this uncanny wooden hand placed upon it. Apparently, the Spirit Hand could answer any question from the audience by “rapping” (tapping sharply) upon the glass with its wooden fingers. One rap for “yes”, two raps for “no” and three if it was “uncertain”. At any time during the act, the wooden hand and glass sheet could be inspected for any hidden mechanisms, magnets, threads or trickery. At the end of the routine, supposedly the hand would slide off the glass at its own volition into the hands of the performer…

Solid, eerie and lifeless, this item appears to be a full scale replica of a woman’s hand and sits on my own gloved hand like a cold handshake. On inspection, it’s devoid of any mechanical tell-tale of its workings. I have my theories about the less than supernatural method of the phenomenon, but what is more of a mystery to me is why people of yesteryear would need to ‘talk to the hand’? Did they really believe? Or was communing with the dead 💀 simply entertainment? (👋*rap *rap *rap)

Happy #Halloween.

And that’s a wrap on LOCUS - our immersive event in a secret location as part of Melb Fringe. It enjoyed a sell out run, the audiences were so great, the reviews had lovely words and we’ve had a ball creating these alternative worlds. Stay tuned because we are planning to develop this and take @locusexperience to another level.

I’ve loved every second working with my co-creators/co-conspirators @drvyom and @domjchambers. And special thanks to @mrcalebalexander for being part of it. I’m proud of this work we made together. Cheers to @melbfringe for supporting this crazy idea with the FringeFund assistance. Big thanks to James from ESTlighting and @ascentmediaau for shooting the thing, plus Hannah Mills and BJ for prop-building mad skills.

Most of all, thanks to the all the visitors who took a punt without knowing anything about the show!
You rocked up to a secret location, replaced your names with number badges, shared your memories and made the uncanny and fantastical nature of the experience feel very intimate, touching and utterly human. Thanks for being a part of LOCUS

Bragging about my Great Wall to Phoebe.

Wildly fun day in NZ back in 2022, filming a tiny little cameo for #TIMEBANDITS. Riffing hysterical/historical dialogue opposite Lisa Kudrow and the witty Bandits cast was an absolute dream gig. Cheers @ajemaine_clement @taikawaititi @iainkevanmorris and First Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Ep 9 of TIME BANDITS streaming now
