“The Spirit Hand” is one of the curiosities that I have come across as part of my @library_vic research Fellowship to uncover Melbourne’s historical fascination with séances and mediumship. 👻 Hidden away inside a grey archive box in the WG Alma Collection, the Spirit Hand was originally used in a Spiritualist-themed conjuring act to evoke one the most common means of spirit communication: table rapping. 🫳 After being examined by sceptical witnesses, a sheet of glass would be suspended above the floor and this uncanny wooden hand placed upon it. Apparently, the Spirit Hand could answer any question from the audience by “rapping” (tapping sharply) upon the glass with its wooden fingers. One rap for “yes”, two raps for “no” and three if it was “uncertain”. At any time during the act, the wooden hand and glass sheet could be inspected for any hidden mechanisms, magnets, threads or trickery. At the end of the routine, supposedly the hand would slide off the glass at its own volition into the hands of the performer… Solid, eerie and lifeless, this item appears to be a full scale replica of a woman’s hand and sits on my own gloved hand like a cold handshake. On inspection, it’s devoid of any mechanical tell-tale of its workings. I have my theories about the less than supernatural method of the phenomenon, but what is more of a mystery to me is why people of yesteryear would need to ‘talk to the hand’? Did they really believe? Or was communing with the dead 💀 simply entertainment? (👋*rap *rap *rap) Happy #Halloween.

Super proud of these talented idiots. @djandrewmcclelland and @louisafitzy, with musical maestro @greglavell are finishing their meticulous, hilarious, silly and smart show “The Von Donk Family Old-Timey Vaudeville Revue” tonight. I had the honour of being asked to design the show’s magic routine and was thrilled to see Lou&Andy smashing it every night, doing what The Age described as “sorcery” ★ ★ ★ ★ Here’s some pics showing how fun the rehearsals were with their “combined card trick/escapology act”. I’m so impressed with the commitment, brains and heart they’ve put into this show. This powerhouse married couple have packed so many skill sets into this joyous ride with original songs, dance choreography, silent movie mime, puns, joke-writing weaving historical references and… magic! It closes Tonight. Go see them!

I had the honour of being asked to design the show’s magic routine and was thrilled to see Lou&Andy smashing it every night, doing what The Age described as “sorcery” ★ ★ ★ ★ Here’s some pics showing how fun the rehearsals were with their “combined card trick/escapology act”. I’m so impressed with the commitment, brains and heart they’ve put into this show. This powerhouse married couple have packed so many skill sets into this joyous ride with original songs, dance choreography, silent movie mime, puns, joke-writing weaving historical references and… magic!
